Dr John Ure

John Ure is the director of the Telecommunications Research Project (TRP) at the Centre of Asian Studies of the University of Hong Kong. John is an economist who specializes in information and communication technologies, with a focus on policy and regulation in the Asia Pacific region. John is also director of the Telecommunication InfoTechnology Forum (TIF). John teaches on masters courses at both the HKU and the Baptist University and supervises doctoral students. He is editor and principal author of Telecommunications in Asia: Policy, Planning and Development (HKU Press, 1995 and 1997) and a sequel to this book is due for publication in 2006. John is also a consultant to various United Nations bodies, including the World Bank, the ITU, the UNDP's Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme (APDIP) and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia Pacific (ESCAP); to national regulatory bodies, such as MCMC (Malaysia) and OFTA (Hong Kong); to public bodies such as the consumer councils of Hong Kong and Macau; and to numerous private sector companies in the ICT area. John is also director of the Telecommunication InfoTechnology Forum (TIF) and is regularly invited to speak at, and to chair conferences around the region.
In addition to serving as a member of HKTUG Executive, John has served on the Hong Kong Committee of PECC and its Trade Advisory Committee, as Hong Kong's representative to PECC Tel Working Group, as a Hong Kong delegate to the APEC Tel Working Group, on the HK Consumer Council's Telecommunications Steering Group, on the advisory committee of the Hong Kong Industrial Technology Centre Corporation, and on the government's Industrial Infrastructure Advisory Committee.
